Dance, Tradition and Identity
This work began with an investigation of the folklore Beirao, followed by visits to various folklore ranches of the municipality of Viseu, to learn their dances. In the studio, we improvised from this repertoire, creating another, fictional one, of invented dances and singings. This piece brings together the memories of these visits, with the dances that are already in the body (from each one's dance stories), thus creating several layers.
Together, we built a score divided in three parts: the first speaks to us through movement, memories related to classes, choreography, sensations experienced as performers or audience; the second, in a circular motion, we take the traditional steps, to an area of deconstruction and repetition; a third part, in which a traditional dance and singing is reinvented.
From here came all night until day
From here came "Toda a Noite até ser dia".

About Toda a noite até ser dia The play falls within the theme Dance Project, of Lugar Presente Dance School. The desire to work from materials linked to the body, identity and memory, arose with the play “Nu Meio” (FilipaFrancisco & Bruno Cochat), which is built from the love stories of the audience in each location where the piece is features. In “Leitura de Listas” (Filipa Francisco & André Lepcki), the play is made from private / public lists that the choreographer shares with the public. In “Dueto” (Filipa Francisco & Idoia Zabaleta) from letters and diaries. In “Íman” (Filipa Francisco & Wonderfull´s Kova M.) the construction was carried out through the connection between contemporary dance and the individual memory of the performers, linked to African dance and hip hop. “Para onde vamos” (Filipa Francisco & António Pedro) calls on the memory and the speeches of women, linked to the fight for women's rights, during the first Republic, making a bridge to the current demands. “A Viagem” (Filipa Francisco & Folkloric Groups) establishes a conection between contemporary dance and the traditions lived by the groups. In "Projecto Espiões" the question of memory is addressed, from the intersection of the four dance stories (Filipa Francisco & Francisco Camacho, Miguel Pereira and Silvia Real). |

My critical appreciation
I come here to talk about a dance show that I saw during the summer vacation entitled Toda a noite até ser dia, which is part of the theme of the folklore Beirão. This show was created by the choreographer Filipa Francisco, the musical creation was in charge of Ana Bento and Bruno Pinto and was interpreted by four 12º grade dance students - Rafaela, Catarina, Pedro and Sara.
In my opinion, this presentation was very complete and phenomenal, since, in preparation, the team went to visit several ranches to learn about their specific characteristics - the dances, the singing and the way people of the ranches interact with each other. Then, the dancers joined the techniques they learned in the folkloric ranches with those they already had from their classical and contemporary training, in order to create a new fictional repertoire of dances and invented singing.
As for the piece itself, the combination of white lights and costumes with the black stage and floor worked perfectly, making this dance exhibition even more interesting and perfect.
I always liked shows that had appealing themes, but this piece surpassed all my expectations by presenting everything that the artists already knew about dance combined with what they learned about traditional dances in my region. I really liked the harmonious way that was achieved and transmitted.
If this show were still on stage, I would recommend that you go and see it, since it combined the art of dance with the knowledge of our cultural identity, something that we must, whenever possible, preserve and transmit.
